How the U.S. Army is Using Social Media

One of the most interesting aspects of web technology and social media nowadays is how it's being deployed by non-techies.

Recently I had the chance to connect with the U.S. Army to find out how it is using the Web.
Blogging, Twitter, Facebook, online video and more is currently in operation at U.S. Army HQ. I spoke to Suzanne Nagel, Digital Chief Accessons Command of the U.S. Army, who walked me through how the Web is being used for recruitment and community.

We started off by discussing a blog called Army Strong Stories, which enables people to hear authentic stories from U.S. Army soldiers. A word from our sponsor: A word from our sponsor: NoSQL Now! is a new conference covering the dynamic field of NoSQL technologies, scheduled for the San Jose Convention Center, in San Jose, California, on August 23-25, 2011.

It is a vendor-neutral forum describing the diversity of NoSQL technologies and helping businesses develop objective evaluation processes to match the right NoSQL solutions with the right business challenge. Keynote speakers include Dwight Merriman, architect of MongoDB, and Mike Stonebraker, database pioneer and serial entrepreneur.Ad powered by BTBuckets Launched in 2008, the target audience of Army Strong Stories is the U.S. Army's primary recruiting target: men aged 18-24. This age group spends a lot of time online, so a blog was seen as an effective way to reach that audience. The site also reaches women in the same age group, but Nagel explained that about 80% of jobs in the U.S. Army aren't open to women (I didn't realize it was that high a number).

Real Army Stories The idea behind Army Strong Stories is to interact with the target audience and enable them to read and hear stories about army life. Soldiers are encouraged to engage with the readers, by replying to comments. The aim is to build a dialog with potential recruits, partly to disavow them of myths about army life - for example, said Nagel, the scream-in-your-face drill sergeant so often portrayed in Hollywood movies. Army Strong Stories features blog posts about anything related to army life.

It's not necessarily career based content (see the tag cloud to the right for a list of topics). I asked Suzanne Nagel whether the bloggers write about politics. She replied that generally no, however the army doesn't censor or filter content - other than for bad language. Video is a relatively new part of the site, generally featuring army staff speaking for a couple of minutes about their lives.

Army Strong Stories isn't the army's main web presence. Goarmy.com is the main recruiting website, which is used for recruiting soldiers and presenting facts about the army.

Usage so far of Army Strong Stories has been broad, said Nagel. She noted that it's not just men 18-24 who frequent the site. Regulars include bloggers' parents and other relatives. Army Social Media Of course in this day and age, it isn't all about the blog. The army uses Facebook and Twitter a lot.

It also has both an iPhone app and a mobile website, featuring the same functionality as the website. They are currently working on an iPad version and will "probably" work on an Android version in the future. Overall, the U.S. army is actively growing its digital efforts. In particular, and in common with many other organizations, over the past 5 years it has increasingly used social media.

commemorative coins are the world’s first currency to feature QR codes,

Coins in the Netherlands just got a lot more interesting. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the mint in Utrecht, the Royal Dutch Mint released some high-tech coins that beautifully combine old and new. On the front, Queen Beatrix smiles from a 3D image. Around her face, elements of the mint building adorn the 5 Euro (silver) and 10 Euro (gold) coins. But when you turn the coin over, you see the non-traditional element of this new design. The reverse side of the coin features a fully scannable QR code. When scanned, the code points to the Mint’s official commemorative website and a “special surprise.” These commemorative coins are the world’s first currency to feature QR codes, though we can’t imagine they will be the last. This idea presents a unique opportunity for governments to sell advertising space, conduct promotions or even just keep “real” money circulating rather than being entirely replaced by plastic cards. Only a limited number of the commemorative coins were released beginning on June 23, 2011.

'Super sardine can': Expanded A380 could hold up to 1,000 passengers

By Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY

This item was written by USATODAY.com contributor David Grossman, who is serving as Guest Editor of Today in the Sky while Ben Mutzabaugh is away.

Are you ready for an airplane that can hold 1,000 passengers? Australian Business Traveler (ABT) reports that this could very well happen when Airbus releases an expanded version of the world's largest commercial jet, the A380.

ABT reports most airlines are flying their version of the A380 with somewhere between just slightly over 400 and less than 540 total seats, depending on the different classes of service offered and the seating configuration implemented by each airline.

But the capacity of the current A380s could and apparently will be much higher. At least one airline, Air Austral, is planning an all-economy-class configuration with 840 seats, according to ABT, which refers to this configuration as a "super sardine can."

"If you think today's A380 is massive, wait until the next generation of the superjumbo," says ABT. The A380-900 will carry 650 passengers in a standard multi-class configuration and as many as 900 passengers in an economy-only configuration, according to ABT.

If that isn't big enough, ABT claims Lufthansa and Air France are already considering an even larger version, dubbed the A380-1000, which could hold as many as 1,000 passengers

capture 360-degree videos from iPhone

A New York start-up wants you to be able to capture and share 360-degree videos from your iPhone.

Kogeto's is now taking pre-orders (at kickstarter.com) for Dot, a $99 optical snap-on lens attachment that turns the iPhone 4 camera into panoramic video capture device. Kogeto demonstrated prototypes of Dot at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York City.

Dot snaps on top of the iPhone 4 lens; the entire thing looks a little bit like a crippled version of the letter "F." It comes in different colors and is a smaller, lower-quality consumer version of Kogeto's $1,399 Lucy S professional imaging solution.

Since Dot can capture the world around you, the user need not aim the iPhone camera when the device is snapped on. In fact you need not hold the phone at all. In its marketing spiel, Kogeto says to "Put down the camera" (on a table) and "Enjoy the party."

Dot is targeted at consumers who might want to capture panoramic videos during birthday celebrations, weddings, concerts and other family/friend gatherings. "You're not framing pictures," says Kogeto founder and CEO Jeff Glasse. "This isn't like shooting regular videos. We think it will create a whole new kind of blogging and vlogging (video blogging)."

Via the company's free software (which is coming in July), you can upload your panoramas to Facebook and Twitter. And you'll need the software to "unwrap" and play back the images.

On the iPhone you can drag your finger to see the video from a different perspective. Viewers on the Web can click with the mouse to change the view of uploaded panoramas. At the company's TechCrunch booth, video on the iPhone looked better than video demonstrated to me on the Web, but Glasse says Kogeto is still noodling with video compression settings. Another potential nuisance for some: Dot won't snap on above any case you may be using to protect the iPhone.

Glasse says Apple's approval for the app is pending (though he doesn't anticipate snags). He later plans on bringing out an Android version.

•3 cups flour
•4 tsp. Baking powder
•1 tsp. Salt
•1 1/4 cups milk
•3 whole egg whites, beaten until stiff
Topping Ingredients

•3/4 cup softened butter

Separate the eggs. Beat egg whites and set aside.

Cream butter and sugar.

Add dry ingredients and milk. Mix just until combined. Don’t overbeat.

Fold in beaten egg whites with a rubber spatula.

In a separate bowl, combine topping ingredients with a pastry cutter until crumbly.

Sprinkle the topping evenly over the top of the cake batter.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. (I actually baked mine almost 55 minutes.) Serve warm—delicious!
