Bangla Desh

Pope meets bishops who probed disgraced order
Pope Benedict XVI had an impromptu meeting on Friday with five bishops who completed a probe into a conservative Catholic order whose founder Marcial Maciel was disgraced by abuse scandals.
The inspectors had been scheduled only to meet with Vatican number two, Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone.
The five inspectors, who completed the nine-month probe in March, visited some 120 Legion of Christ communities around the world.
The Mexican-born Maciel, who died aged 87 in 2008, was accused of molesting seminarians and secretly fathering children.
The global probe wrapped up as the Roman Catholic Church has been rocked by paedophile priest scandals in the Americas and Europe.
Before Maciel's fall from grace, he and the order he founded in Mexico in 1941 and led with an iron fist were championed by Benedict's predecessor John Paul II.
Earlier this month in Mexico, the order asked for forgiveness from two brothers claiming to be Maciel's sons said he had abused them.
Last year the order confirmed a report in The New York Times that Maciel had also secretly fathered a daughter.
In May 2006, Benedict ordered Maciel to renounce all duties and lead a "quiet life of prayer and penitence."
But a canonical trial was ruled out because of his advanced age and poor health.
The Legion of Christ is present in 22 countries, notably Mexico and Spain, and runs 12 universities. It counts 800 priests, 2,500 seminarians and 70,000 lay members.

Jet offers biz class in Konnect
New Delhi: (India) Airline business seems to have become the best indicator for the changing fortunes of a nation's economy. Last year, India's bigget airline (by market share) Jet reacted to the slowdown-induced travel blues by removing business class seats from some of its planes on domestic routes to launch an all-economy brand Konnect.
Now with the sharp revival, it has re-introduced eight business class seats on the low-cost brand planes in the first two rows. For passengers, the premium economy called Konnect Select means travelling business class at 20% lower fares than the same class in full service airlines. "The routes we converted to Konnect in May 2009 had seen occupancy falling to 60% as passengers were shifting to low fare products. The Konnect flights were going almost 80% full and so we decided to convert the remaining 20% to business class on passenger demand," Jet's chief commercial officer Sudheer Raghavan said.
Jet has three brands in its stable now — full service Jet; all-economy JetLite and Konnect with Select. "Depending on the demand from international or domestic side, we can deploy any of these services on those routes," he said.

RIL makes fourth oil discovery in Cambay
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
New Delhi: Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Industries Ltd has made a fourth oil discovery in the Cambay Basin in Gujarat. Two hydrocarbon-bearing zones were discovered in a well drilled in exploration block CB-ONN-2003/1, which flowed 300 barrels of oil during testing, a company statement said on Wednesday.
"The discovery is significant as this is expected to open more oil pool areas, leading to better hydrocarbon potential within the block," the statement said. The 635 sq km block is located at a distance of about 130 km from Ahmedabad. "This discovery, named Dhirubhai-47, has been notified to the government and Directorate General of Hydrocarbons," the statement said. "The potential commercial interest of the discovery is being ascertained through more data gathering and analysis."
The block covers an area of 635 sq km in two parts — Part-A and Part-B. RIL, as operator, holds 100% participating interest in the block. The discovery well, CB1-A-F1, was drilled to a depth of 1,605 metres in Part-A of the block. While the entire block area has been covered with two-dimensional seismic, about 80% of the block area has three-dimensional seismic coverage. Of the 14 exploratory wells drilled in the block by RIL so far, 10 are located in Part-A and the remaining four are in Part-B.

Docs pull splinter from brain
Foreign Object Was Lodged In 11-Year-Old’s Head For 2 Years
New Delhi: (India) The doctors were shocked when 11-year-old Rahul walked into the neurosurgery OPD at AIIMS a few days ago. Rahul had been walking about with an 8cm-long wooden splinter in his brain — it had pierced his left eye — for the past two years. On Wednesday, doctors at AIIMS extricated, in a five-hour-long surgery, the splinter from Rahul’s brain. The doctors were very surprised that Rahul hadn’t developed a neurological or other complication over the past two years.
‘‘It’s unbelievable. Despite having a foreign body in his brain, he didn’t develop a medical complication. He was absolutely fine when he came to us,’’ said Dr P Sarat Chandra, associate professor, AIIMS, who operated on Rahul.
According to Rahul’s family, he was playing when he fell on a wooden stick, a splinter from which pierced his left eye and entered his brain. ‘‘The stick broke when he tried to get up. We took him to a local hospital where doctors said they couldn’t remove it,’’ said Ratna Devi, Rahul’s mother, who took him to several hospitals before bringing him to AIIMS. Because of the accident, Rahul lost his vision in the left eye but that didn’t stop him from going to school and going about his everyday activities. “He had no difficultly at all. We consulted several doctors but all of them refused to operate him. Then someone suggested us that we should take him to AIIMS.’’
Apart from the left eye orbit, the splinter pierced the temporal lobe (responsible for memory), cavernous sinus (a collection of thin-walled veins at the base of the brain), the cerebellum (responsible for motor function), and was exerting pressure on the brain stem. ‘‘The splinter missed the internal carotid artery, which is very close to the cavernous sinus, by less than a millimetre. Since the splinter had been lodged in the brain for two years, there was some inflammation around it and there were significant changes near the cerebellum. Had the splinter been pushed farther inside, it could have been fatal,’’ said Chandra. Doctors say Rahul’s case is nothing short of a miracle. ‘‘All the major areas in the brain were affected by the splinter, but there were no complications. It is surprising that he didn’t develop an infection over the past two years. And he is very lucky there was no major damage to the brain,’’ said Dr AK Mahapatra, head of the department of neurosurgery, AIIMS.
During the surgery, doctors had to be very careful while pulling the splinter out. Even a minor error might have proved fatal. ‘‘We cut open the
front of the left skull and the roof of the eye orbit. We retracted the brain so that we could see the splinter and then, slowly, pulled it out. The splinter had become soggy and it was difficult to pull it out in one piece. We then washed the affected areas of the brain with antibiotic solution,’’ said Dr Chandra. Rahul has lost vision in his left eye due to the injury but doctors were able to preserve the globe of the eye. “He wouldn’t be able to see but cosmetically it will not look bad,’’ said Dr Chandra.
Doctors say that it will take Rahul a month or two to recover completely. ‘‘The risk of him catching an infection is high. He can still get meningitis so we have to be very careful,’’ said Dr Mahapatra.

Chaos, mismanagement forces Shoania, family to flee 'walima' reception hall
Wed, Apr 28 12:35 PM
Lahore, Apr.28 (ANI): Chaotic scenes were witnessed at the 'walima' reception of the newly married sports couple Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik, and ceremony ended early as overcrowding at the banquet hall gave way to complete mismanagement.
Several high profile guests, including Prime Minister Yosuf Raza Gilani's son Abdul Qadir Gilani, Punjab Governor Salman Taseer and federal population welfare minister Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan attended the party.
A smiling Sania, wearing a sea-green sharara entered the hall holding her new hubby's hand, who was in a black suit, but the couple along with their family members left the venue shortly after the hall swelled with people.
Similar scenes were seen during the reception ceremony at Sialkot, Shoaib's hometown, which was organised at a hockey stadium, as more than 2000 people turned up for the function against the 1000 invitees.
In their bid to prevent 'uninvited guests', private security guards present outside the reception venue did not even allow some of Shoaib's relatives and friends to enter the stadium, which gave way to a heated argument between both sides. The matter was resolved only after some other family members intervened. (ANI)
Haute couture to hotel couture, Armani stitches style
A luxury hotel crafted by designer Giorgio Armani opened on Tuesday as the first landmark tenant in the world's tallest skyscraper.
The 160-room Armani Hotel Dubai is a welcome bit of good news for Dubai's leaders after the troubled debut of the more than 828-metre Burj Khalifa in January. An elevator malfunction forced a two-month closure of the spire's observation deck - the only part of the tower open to the public.
The Italian designer was on hand for Tuesday's opening ceremony, which was delayed a week because of travel chaos from the Icelandic volcano. He said his goal was to build a comfortable and stylish hotel that would leave an impression.
"I wanted something very important, something to be remembered," Armani said. "Something not just for the present, but beyond." Armani was joined by the chairman of Burj Khalifa's developer Emaar Properties, which has a partnership to open more Armani-branded hotels, including the next one in Milan.
Armani's Dubai outpost stretches from the base of the spindly, metal-and-glass Burj through the eighth floor, then skips some two dozen stories before continuing on floors 38 and 39. It includes multiple restaurants, a spa and an outdoor swimming pool.
Dubai's newest five-star hotel is the first part of the Burj Khalifa to open to the public since the 124th-floor observation deck welcomed its first visitors in January.
The Burj Khalifa rises more than 160 stories, though the exact number of habitable floors is not known. Much of the building remains empty as work continues inside.
Armani's hotel will soon have competition. Rival Italian fashion house Gain Versace SpA plans to open its own luxury hotel in Dubai later this year. Its claim to fame: an artificially cooled beach designed to keep sunbathing guests from getting too uncomfortable in the Gulf's scorching summer heat

'Be like Madame Bruni
London, April 28 (IANS) 'Be like Madame Bruni, take a small French model', says an advertisement that mocks President Nicolas Sarkozy's short stature and has caused a stir in France.
Sixt, a German car hire firm, has urged customers to rent a small Citroen C3 hatchback through the advertising campaign, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.
'These advertisements are entitled to be funny and we need to inject a little fun into our business after such a difficult period experienced by many of our clients,' Sixt president in France, Jean-Philippe Doyen, was quoted as saying.
The international media has often pointed out the height difference between First Lady Carla Bruni, who is 5 feet 10 inches tall, and her husband who is 5 feet 5 inches tall.
The firm could face legal action for referring to Bruni and Sarkozy in a promotional campaign. 'People have been sued for this kind of thing before,' French daily Le Parisien observed.
Sarkozy is one of the world's shortest heads of state. He is a little taller than North Korea's Kim Jong-Il and Russia's Dmitry Medvedev, both of whom stand at 5 feet 3 inches.
To make up for the height difference, Bruni has been photographed wearing flat soles while Sarkozy wears specially-made 'stacked heels' to make him appear two inches taller, the media report said.

WHY MADURI GUPTA WAS SPYING
New Delhi, April 27 (IANS) Madhuri Gupta, the junior Indian diplomat who was arrested here on charges of spying for Pakistan's ISI, worked with the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), a foreign policy think tank, before she was posted at the Indian high commission in Islamabad.
She worked here in 2006-2007 as assistant director, an official at the ICWA, better known as Sapru House, told IANS.
Sources told IANS that she specialized in Urdu and was very keen to go to Pakistan, suggesting that she may have had cross-border links for some time.
Gupta, who served as second secretary at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, was arrested from her home here on the charges of spying for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), police and official sources told IANS.
'The accused Madhuri Gupta was arrested from her house in east Delhi by Delhi Police's Special Cell on charges of spying and leaking some important documents. Before the arrest, she was detained and questioned for 2-3 days,' a police source told IANS.
'She was serving in press and information wing of the Indian High Commission in Pakistan for the last couple of years. Her movements were being followed from past several months,' he said.
'The woman was produced in the court Monday after which she was sent to police custody,' the source added, saying that an official statement on the arrest would probably come from the external affairs ministry.
'We do not deny the report. But this is beyond the purview of the home ministry,' G.K. Pillai, home secretary, told Times Now channel.
Other sources said Gupta had been under the scanner for some time and the action was taken after it was confirmed that she was passing sensitive information to her handlers.
Gupta was not a member of the main Indian Foreign Service (IFS), but belonged to the lower cadre known as IFS-B.

THINK B4U DRINK BOTTLED WATER ???
By now, you probably already know a lot of reasons to think twice about drinking bottled water, right?
For one thing, about 86 percent of the 30+ billion plastic bottles of water gulped by thirsty American consumers every year are never recycled, even though most U.S. cities have recycling programs in place to turn them into everything from new bottles to carpet and clothing. For another, a lot of popular brands of bottled water are really little or no different than the tap water that comes out of your kitchen faucet without the hefty price tag.
On top of all that, tap water is generally safer than bottled water. Bottled water companies aren’t required to test for chemicals such as arsenic, bacteria such as E. Coli, viruses such as Giardia and Crypto-sporidium and other nasty comtaminants. Municipal water districts are.
Well, here’s one more reason to flush bottled water from your daily routine: it turns out that getting one liter of bottled water into your hands requires up to 2,000 times as much energy to produce, package and transport the stuff as it takes to provide you with the same amount of tap water.
Does Eating Snow Equal Drinking Water?
The truth is that eating snow requires a tremendous amount of energy, and body heat to melt the snow in the first place, and the amount of water is several times LESS than the amount of snow was originally. A bucket of snow will melt down to a very tiny amount of water.
Snow Poisoning is a recent term for a dog who is essentially dying of thirst, surrounded by snow. It is extremely important to ensure that your dog has fresh water available at all times. There are heated water bowls available to prevent freezing and allow ease of drinking, even in the coldest temperatures. A dog needs more water in the winter as his body expends more energy in just keeping warm. Of course you should always have fresh water available in the house as well.

Shoaib Malik wanted to cash on his Wedding
Lahore, Apr.25 (ANI): Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik wanted to cash on his extensively reported wedding with Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza, as he has reportedly demanded 35 million rupees for media rights of his 'walima' reception, which would be held on April 25 in his hometown, Sialkot.
According to a private television channel, Shoaib is in consultation with two media houses for leasing out the rights of coverage of his reception ceremony, but a deal has not been struck so far.
Shoaib's brother-in-law Imran Zafar had earlier said that the media would not be allowed to cover the function.
Since landing in Pakistan, Sania has been avoiding talking to the country's media, as she is said to have a contract with an Indian television channel, sources said.
Meanwhile, over a dozen members of Sania's family including her father Imran Mirza and sister Anum Mirza have arrived in Lahore to attend the star sports couple's reception.
"We are extremely excited to be here in Lahore and I hope the functions are successful," The Daily Times quoted Imran, as saying. (ANI)

"We are extremely excited to be here in Lahore and I hope the functions are successful," The Daily Times quoted Imran, as saying. (ANI)

After drawing flak for her mismatched wed- ding look, Sania Mirza made some amends for her reception held in husband Shoaib Malik's home town Sialkot on Sunday. The resplendent beige and red sari that the tennis ace wore for the evening, many found was inspired by Aishwarya Rai's Bengali sari from Dola Re Dola song in the film Devdas.
“The outfit was stunning and the red and beige colours worked perfectly for Sania. Her red lipstick and jewellery lent a Bengali touch to her get-up,“ said designer Nikhil Mehra, who had designed Sania's outfit for her reception in India.
Designer Reynu Tandon said, “Everyone wearing a Bengali-South Indian sari of this kind, and in these colours, looks the same.
Neeta Lulla had done Aishwarya's sari in geor- gette, Sania's designer has used a different material.“
Designer Nida Mahmood said it's a nice traditional combination. “But barring the colour of the sari, there's nothing similar to the look,“ she said.
While Sania amped up her style, there were glitch- es galore at the reception.
Uninvited guests and security mismanagement marred the reception at the Sialkot hockey ground, forc- ing the hassled newly-weds to leave the function before it was over. Upset with the mismanagement, Sania's family, which had gone from India, also left for Lahore early. Eyewitnesses said hundreds of people showed up for the reception, many of whom weren't invitees.
Some people even said that invites to the reception had been sold for Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000. To make matters worse, the city power cor- poration allowed no extra lighting at the venue.
